1914年四月十日晚上，泰坦尼克号，满载二千二百零七名搭客，由英国首航前往美国的纽约。  谁知道启航后四天，在大西洋误碰冰山。由于船上人多而救生艇不足，登时秩序大乱。这时一位乘客约翰．侯伯牧师，应邀到美国芝加哥慕迪教会布道。他眼见这紧急情况，就呼吁全船的基督徒到甲板集合。 当时有几十位基督徒陆续前来，侯伯牧师庄严的宣告说：弟兄姊妹们，我们随时都有生命危险，但我们已相信了耶稣，有了永生的盼望，不用惧怕；不过，船上还有不少未信的人，他们还未得救，若此刻失去生命，必永远沉沦灭亡，倘若我们现在不跟他们争用逃生设备，让未信者有更多人获救，以后他们仍有机会听闻福音，相信耶稣得永生。...... 那一群基督徒听后，大受感动，他们一同唱著圣诗“更加与主接近，更加接近”，庄严的诗歌感动了船上的其它乘客，大家秩序井然的接受船上工作人员安排，让妇女儿童先登上救生艇。乐队领班亨利．哈特利和其它的乐手，也穿著燕尾服走上甲板，为这群基督徒伴奏。在圣诗「更加与主接近，更加接近」的歌声中，锅炉爆炸、电力中断、船身断为两截，直到海水把这些基督徒与乐师的生命和歌声 ，一起带进大西洋底。
